Alajuela, Costa Rica
Costa Rica's Alajuela coffee growing regions are highlighted by rich volcanic soil and ideal high-altitude conditions (1000-2000 meters), with cool temperatures and strong sun. They benefit from a subtropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons.

A Lifetime in Coffee
Carlos Fernández Morera is in his 65th season farming coffee in San Rafael de San Ramón, where his family has lived since 1895. He holds a deep connection to his trees and the soil he works. “Coffee is a very grateful crop,” he says, “if you dedicate a little love, it responds very well.” Señor Morera’s farm is named Finca El Cerro, where this exceptional coffee is grown only on one specific plot.
El Diamante
The particular plot where this award-winning Caturra lot grows is called El Diamante (The Diamond). The coffee undergoes anaerobic fermentation in sealed tanks with a precise addition of mucilage and fresh water. The slurry is closely monitored for pH, temperature, brix, and a host of other variables. The lot is dried for three days on a patio before moving to raised beds for another eighteen days of drying.
